The Gift of Time
A Certificate Award ceremony took place on Tuesday evening 30 September in Corick House, Clogher, for those involved in the Accredited Befriending Volunteer Programme. The event, called 'The Gift of Time - A New Beginning and Support for Individuals, Victims and Survivors', was organized by the Community Relations Council and was attended by 150 guests. Paul Clark, UTV presenter, as the special guest, presented 65 certificates to the befriending volunteers who come from across Northern Ireland
The Gift of Time reflects the precious gift that befrienders give when they spend time visiting those who have suffered most as a result of the troubles who often feel forgotten and isolated.
Joan Clements from the Community Relations Council spoke about the benefits of befriending based on a piece of research undertaken by the Community Relations Council.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs. Reatha Hassan, OBE, chairperson of the SAVER/NAVER group emphasized the need to reduce the isolation of those who have suffered so much as direct result of the troubles and the many benefits of befriending such as regular companionship, support and help with various problems, new friendships, learning to cope after bereavement, a new link with the community as well as a new opportunity to be more active and get out and about.
Paul Clark spoke about how befrienders make a difference. He said "The people who make the greatest difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money or the most awards. They are the ones who care- about us- and others. They are people like you."
